The other day my husband walked into the kitchen just as an alarm on my phone went off and I reached up to get a piece of carefully hidden dark chocolate. He joked that it was my “dark chocolate alarm.” Though a great idea, that is not what my alarm was for. I’ll tell you more about that alarm later, but first let me confess something I struggle with even after over 25 years of walking with the Lord.
I forget that God is with me.
On the mornings I manage to meet with Him, it is all too easy for me to close my Bible and rush into my day without looking back. Sometimes I can’t even remember by the end of the day what verse stood out to me that morning. I get so caught up in my tasks that even while I shoot up prayers for patience or self-control, I don’t even really think about Him being there with me. It feels more like a distant shout out to the universe for help.
Anyone else struggle with this?
Last year I went to a spiritual formation retreat aimed at helping us practice being in His Presence. My application from the retreat wasn’t a brilliant step-by-step plan, but it is slowly making a difference. My application? I set an alarm on my phone that goes off a few times a day. When it does, I stop what I am doing and thank God that He is present. Simple right? But it is what I need—an alarm that won’t stop and is louder than my three boys doing science in the kitchen and fractions at the dining room table. Until I find my phone and turn it off, it beckons me to slow down and remember God is with me. I also sometimes ponder the verses I poured over that morning. Since restarting homeschool, most have been in the Psalms with promises of strength and help! 😛
After doing this for awhile now my kids automatically chirp with the alarm “God is with us!” It is helping us all remember He is with us throughout the day. I also reach for a lot of dark chocolate, no alarm prompting needed. 😉
Mamas, I pray you realize His Presence more and more this year as you walk with Him through the ups and downs of motherhood and ministry. Blessings to you!
“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
